FOMREK responds to long-standing challenges in the visibility and inclusion of Global South scholars in forced migration research
The Forced Migration Research Network–Kenya (FOMREK) emerged from two key national workshops convened by the Kenya Evidence Platform Project in May and October 2024. Bringing together researchers from leading Kenyan universities and humanitarian organizations, the workshops emphasized the need to strengthen local academic voices in migration research and policy.
Following these deliberations, FOMREK was launched on October 30, 2024, at Maseno University by Vice Chancellor Professor Julius Nyabundi, in the presence of the Vice Chancellor of Kenya Presbyterian University.
Core Objectives
- Conduct joint and interdisciplinary research among academia and practitioners.
- Disseminate evidence-based information for policy formulation and implementation.
- Build the capacity of early-career researchers on forced displacement.
- Foster collaboration among institutions and stakeholders working with displaced populations.
Mission
To promote Kenya-led, evidence-based research and collaboration that informs policy and contributes to humane and sustainable solutions for forced migration.
Vision
A leading academic and policy network that produces and shares Kenya-centered migration knowledge to drive equitable and durable outcomes for displaced populations.

Investigating pathways to sustainable solutions for displaced populations, including voluntary repatriation, local integration, and resettlement opportunities.

Focusing on environmental degradation, mitigation practices (such as resilient agriculture, waste management, renewable energy adoption, and water conservation) and their impacts within refugee contexts.

Integration & Humanitarian – Development Nexus
Exploring the intersection of humanitarian aid and long-term development strategies to support refugee integration and self-reliance in host communities.

Examining policies, legal frameworks, and institutional mechanisms that govern refugee protection, rights, and responsibilities at local, national, and regional levels.
